Use: rom folk medicine: Castor oil fomentations are recommended for ridding the body of hardened mucus in the form of cysts, tumors and polyps. The castor oil is applied by soaking a flannel cloth in the oil and applying it over the liver. A hot water bottle or electric heating pad is applied on top of the pack and left on the area for 30 to 60 minutes. This is repeated daily for three days followed by olive oil massages over the same area for three days. On the seventh day, it is recommended by some that the patient should rest by fasting on nothing but distilled water. Depending on the particular case, this procedure should be repeated for between six weeks to six months to properly cleanse the system.

Use: Super Refined Castor Oil is a highly purified version of naturally derived castor oil, which has a high degree of functionality, making it an extremely useful excipient. However, this increased functionality makes the molecule more susceptible to breakdown from oxidative stresses, such as polar impurities. Croda has addressed this issue by purifying (Super Refining) Castor Oil to remove these oxidative stresses, without altering the structure of the molecule. Super Refined Castor Oil is suitable for use in IV injections, ophthalmic emulsions, oral capsules and tablets and topical dosages and has a required HLB of 14.

CASTOR OIL - PALE PRESSED
Odor: characteristic
Use: The uses of castor oil have changed over the years. Sixty years ago, castor oil was used for medicinal purposes and as a general industrial lubricant. Soon after, chemical engineers were able to produce derivatives of the oil that were of even more benefit to man. Sulfonated (sulfated) castor oil, or Turkey Red Oil , was the first synthetic detergent after ordinary soap, and other forms of the oil became important for the treatment of leather, industrial lubricants, and other industrial uses. Today, chemical engineers have come up with many uses of castor oil and its derivatives such as: polyamide 11 (Nylon 11) engineering plastic, lubricating grease, coatings, inks, sealant, aircraft lubricants, surfactants, emulsifiers, encapsulants, plastic films, plasticizer for coatings, and components for shatterproof safety glass. Castor oil has even made its way into cosmetics and related products due to its non comedogenicity. Obviously, castor oil and its derivatives have become an important commodity and is again a topic of interest to the chemical industry.

Use: In summary, castor oil is today used in plastics, textiles, paints, cosmetics, and a number of inks and industrial adhesives. One reason for the current popularity of castor oil is due to the fact that its numerous chemical derivatives are "renewable sources, bio-degradable and eco-friendly."
