Odor: intensely fresh and spicy aromatic
Use: Cumin, Cuminum cyminum, or caraway is a small annual herb belonging to the carrot family. Cumin’s dark-green leaves are delicate and finely cut into feathery forms. The small white flowers arranged in umbels produce the elongated, ridged, aromatic seeds. Seeds are harvested before full maturity, when they begin to develop a yellow tint. It takes forty days for the seedlings to mature. At harvest time, the plants are reaped and dried; the fruits are then harvested by winnowing. The essential oil, distilled from the crushed seeds, has an intensely fresh and spicy aromatic fragrance.

Use: Adam Michael has this to say “Cumin seed essential oil is a super spicy oil that needs to be handled with care. In the past I have spilled this material when decanting and boy oh boy that smell refused to go away. The smell is simply like smelling cumin seeds one cooks with spicy, warming, dry and a tad green. In minute amounts blends well with black pepper, curry leaf and ginger. Produced by steam distilling the seeds, yellow in colour and of a pourable viscosity.”

Safety in Use Information:
Category: flavor and fragrance agents
IFRA Critical Effect: Phototoxicity
IFRA fragrance material specification:
Where the bergapten (5-methoxypsoralen) content of all relevant oils present in a compound has been determined, it is recommended that for applications on areas of skin exposed to sunshine, excluding bath preparations, soaps and other products which are washed off the skin, the total level of bergapten in the consumer products should not exceed 0.0015% (15 ppm). This is equivalent to 0.0075% (75 ppm) in a fragrance compound used at 20% in the consumer product. Where the level of bergapten has not been determined by appropriate methods, the limits specified in the guidelines on individual oils should apply. In those cases, where such oils are used in combination with other phototoxic ingredients, the additive effect has to be taken into consideration and the use levels have to be reduced accordingly. The sum of the concentrations of all phototoxic fragrance ingredients, expressed in % of their recommended maximum level in the consumer product, shall not exceed 100.
