Use: Black cohosh also is known as baneberry, black snakeroot, bugbane, squawroot, cimifuga, rattletop, rattleweed and wanzenkraut.The roots and rhizomes of this herb are used medicinally.American Indians used the plant to treat general fatigue, kidney ailments, malaria, rheumatism, sore throat.North American colonists used the herb for treating menstrual disorders, bronchitis, nervous disorder with spasms, swelling, fever, nervous disorders.Also,black cohosh has been used in Europe since the 17th century to treat joint pain,and pain in pregnancy,acute rheumatism, headache, cough, chorea, and other nervous system disorders.

a plant genus of the family ranunculaceae that contains triterpenoid saponins. remifemin from c. racemosa is used to suppress luteinizing hormone. it is reclassified by some to actaea. the common name of black snakeroot is also used with asarum and sanicula.
