an enzyme capable of hydrolyzing highly polymerized dna by splitting phosphodiester linkages, preferentially adjacent to a pyrimidine nucleotide. this catalyzes endonucleolytic cleavage of dna yielding 5'-phosphodi- and oligonucleotide end-products. the enzyme has a preference for double-stranded dna.
